New Client. New Website.

Hopewell Guest House

The Hopewell Guest House is self-catered accommodation on the outskirts of a private game reserve, close to the coast in South Africa.

I was asked to create a website to showcase the property. My client wanted something simple so I created a single page layout which contains everything potential visitors need to know. Its rugged 'safari' style adds character, which is complimented by contrasting modern icons, and the site is brought to life with the latest JavaScript functions; an animated photo gallery being the main focal point. I used Photoshop for edit the photos, enhancing them with bolder colours and giving them an 'aged' appearance by adding distortion, borders and shadows.

I regularly make use of jQuery to enhance websites I create. This has always been straight forward, but it wasn't until recently that I wanted to use the Prototype JavaScript Framework on a website with jQuery, and found a conflict.

As a side note, I was using Prototype so I could take advantage of the script.aculo.us add-on, but the same applies either way.

The cause of the conflict was that, by default, jQuery uses the dollar symbol ($) as a shortcut for 'jQuery'. Thankfully, the resolution to this comes in two quick and easy steps.
